Charter Steel has been awarded with the 2025 Better Project Award by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings Initiative. This award recognizes outstanding achievements in implementing innovative, energy-efficient solutions at individual facilities.
The Better Buildings Initiative
The Better Buildings Initiative brings together leaders from both the public and private sectors to improve energy efficiency across the nation’s homes, commercial buildings and industrial plants by accelerating investment and promoting best practices.
Charter Steel’s Solar Field Project
Charter Steel received the award for its
groundbreaking solar field project, which features a 15 MW solar photovoltaic system. Spanning 50 acres, the installation includes nearly 30,000 solar panels and generates over 30 million kWh of electricity annually — accounting for approximately 8% of the facility’s total electricity consumption. Based on actual performance data, the system has already reduced emissions by nearly 13,000 MTCO₂e.
Notably, this is the largest behind-the-meter solar installation in Wisconsin and directly powers Charter Steel — the state’s single largest energy consumer.
