Charter Steel's Smart Solution Boosts Safety: Poly for Steel Coil Case Study

Challenge

Traditionally, steel bar, rod, and wire products are secured for transport using metal banding. While this method is reliable, the bands can store significant tension and pose safety risks when cut. When a customer approached us looking for a safer alternative, we explored and recommended a poly banding solution designed to reduce the risk of injury without compromising product security.

Result

Poly banding is a durable plastic material with high tensile strength. Wrapped tightly around the coil like metal banding, it keeps products secure while dispersing tension more gradually, reducing the risk of snap-back and making it safer for workers to cut and remove. This solution addresses both product integrity and employee safety, providing a practical, effective alternative to traditional metal bands. Industrial-grade poly banding (also known as poly strapping), like the type we use, is trusted for heavy loads on semi-trailers and in other demanding applications.

Solution

The customer’s new poly banding offers multiple benefits:
  • Safety: The flexibility of poly banding allows it to release tension gradually, making it safer for the customer’s team to handle when coils arrive.
  • Easier handling: Steel bands can slip, while poly bands grip the coil’s surface and stay in place. Less slipping means better stability during transport and easier handling.
  • No extra tools needed: Unlike steel bands, you can cut poly banding with a simple safety knife—no special cutting tools required.
  • Compact disposal: Poly banding eliminates the sharp, bulky scrap associated with steel banding. Lightweight poly fits in smaller receptacles, such as 55-gallon drums.
  • Dependable strength: Through trials of band counts and tensioning, we confirmed that our poly banding is resistant to breaks and ideal for coil transport and storage.
